The exhibition of photography works by Dmitry Lelchuk “Shoina. People of Sand” will open on October the 25th at 18:00 in the Navicula Artic Gallery (art centre “Pushkinskaya-10”). The project was organized during the partnership year “Russia-Germany”. The exposition will present photography works made during the author’s journeys to the village of Shoina in 2005 and 2010. At the opening there will be a premiere screening of the movie “Sand People of Shoina”.
Short cold summers, long winter without sunshine - polar climate of northern Russia dictates harsh living conditions. Every gust of wind turns into a sand storm. And only through resistance of people who daily fight back their houses from the element, the village Shoina still exists. The project of Dmitry Lelchuk “Shoina. People of Sand” shows real life in a brutal struggle with the inexorable nature of the North.
Dmitry Lelchuk is one of the leading photography artists in Germany. For the reportage “Sand People of Shoina” that he made for the “Mare” Magazine he was awarded of the prestigious Hansel-Mieth-Preis.
