12. 5D MK2 Firmware Update Test Footage
Canon have done what they should of done before the 5D Mark 2 came out, that is give us full control over, aperture, and ISO settings. The camera with the new firmware is now the real deal giving us the power to style our shots how we want them. It was the second most exciting thing that came out from Canon, the first being the camera itself.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVEN'T DOWNLOADED IT YET DO IT NOW!!!!!!!!!

This is some footage before and after the firmware update. You cant tell the difference because I was tricking the camera before the update by using the "Old Twist The Lens On The Camera Trick" I don't have to worry about dropping the lens off the front anymore.

THANK YOU CANON..... NOW GIVE US REAL VIDEO CAMERA WITH THE 5D TECHNOLOGY......

Luv Fletch

what lenses are you using there ?
  • Peter Andrews 2 years ago
According to the spotlight on planet5d, it looks like he was using "Canon Prime lenses 24mm, 50mm, 85mm, 400mm"
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
You got it in one Peter. Dont forget the 100-400mm.

Incredible footage Mike. Your films continue to provoke my wanting a 5D!

for me it's telling not about great camera, but about a great photographer. and about (with a high probability) quite good director of photography for film.

    Too kind Aleksey. Thanks.
  • Zachary Morgan 2 years ago
Seriously. These shots are world class. You should be filming movies.

Another fantastic video mike, the first images I already saw, and the new ones are breath taking.
As always: thanks for the inspiration.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
No probs Daniele. Glad you liked it. How are you going with your 5D. Have you uploaded the firmware update yet?
  • Daniele Zedda 2 years ago
I am doing great, I got the new firmware a couple hours after release ;)

    Cheers Mike.
  •
  • Stunning footage as usual! Keep it up Mike! I would like to see a bit more movement in the footage though... just to have an idea of where the camera starts to show weakness in regard to quicker pans... etc. It would be nice to be able to see where the limitations are, to help me in my decision of getting a 5D. Thanks again for your great work Mike! Peace
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Thanks mate. I have had issues with panning with the 5D especially slow pans. I was using a Canon L series 100-400mm with image stabiliser and it seemed to pan without any stepping or jumps. I will investigate further to see if there is something that has changed when I edit.

  • Jani Saajanaho 2 years ago
Rly good stuff indeed! How did you manage to slow down the footage so much? I'm referring to the scenes with helicopter.
  • john kopec 2 years ago
Yes, I was wondering that myself
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Cant answer that in a tech sense. All I did was disconnect the lens from the body and the blades slowed down. If someone can explain why that would be great but in the end it doesn't really matter. If it looks great who cares.

    Thanks for watching.
  • Ear Photo Image 2 years ago
Im sorry but that makes no sense at all, you disconnected the lens from the body and that somehow allowed the 5d to capture footage at 120 frames per second?!? Wow thats some trick :)

When i do that, the camera doesn't work very well. Besides that, some gorgeous shots and work there, nicely done.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
The camera is not shooting at 120fps. Dont ask me how it works but when you disconnect the lens you only do it by about a millimeter. Any more and the camera wont work properly. It works as that is how I did it. No other camera used, no bullshit. Pardon the swearing.
  • Waynester 2 years ago
So what was your shutter speed when you did the trick of pulling out the lens? another thing, do you use Manual? AV or TV? beautiful shots by the way!
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
No Idea on the shutter speed WayneO I was too busy getting blown around by the rotor blade wash. With the new firmware loaded I only use Manual. Thanks for the comment.
  • Anton Woldhek 2 years ago
It could be that by chance you hit the shutterspeed was almost exactly in sync with the rotation speed of the rotors. This same effect you see when you film car rims. Because the wheel does a complete spin(s)+a lil bit it seems like the rim is moving slow, it has actually done a whole rotation or in this case probably several rotations + a lilbit more. And also ofcourse, you sometimes see car rims on film that seem to be going backwards, that is because the wheel is spinning almost once completly in between shutter open & closes.
But I guess the answer to the original question, how did you manage the great looking slomotions is: there is no slow motion.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Best answer so far Anton. The blades weren't slowed down in post but overall I did slow down this footage to 80% of it's origional speed.
  • Jason Armstrong 2 years ago
I think it's a combination of a high shutter speed which freeze the blades reducing the motion blur between frames and the frame rate vs shutter speed vs the blades rotation making it look smooth and continuous. The wrong ratio of those 3 elements could have come out looking like a different effect altogether

I'm sure the reduced speed of the footage made it more graceful as well.
  • Dan Valentine plus 1 year ago
I agree Jason. There is no way that just by slowing the footage the blades would have been in such a position. If one compares the movement of the chopper to the travel of the blades, one can concur that the blades could not have been moving so slow. The chopper would've fallen from the sky. It's like the car rim thing Anton said.
  • John DL 1 year ago
I was a bit puzzled to see the rotor slowmo aswell, till I figured it must have been insync with the camera's shutter speed creating this illusion. When the chopper flies over the waterfall you can clearly notice from the water that this is just a slight slowmo of the actual footage.

Hi Mike, great shots as usual! Although I fully appreciate your artistic skills (and this is the main thing), I still wonder about a technical aspect, if I may: what encoder and which settings did you use to make this version for vimeo. This would help me and other vimeo users a lot. I work with Mac so the question is if it can be done with a software that runs on Mac. I realized that the best footage is only the first step before the final step of encoding correctly, because everything goes through flash here and looses some of its original quality. -Kedar
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
    Hi Kedar

Vimeo has a great tutorial by some guy who goes through step by step in compressor how to get best results for uploading to Vimeo. Just search their help vids and you should find it. I did this ages ago and I have it saved in compressor so all I do is press a button and its done. Cant remember the settings of the top of my head. Good luck.

  • Aaron Marshall 2 years ago
It looks incredible. What's the twisting the lens trick?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
You had to disconnect the lens a couple of mm to keep your aperture set and maintain the depth of field you wanted. You dont have to do it anymore as the firmware update fixed all that.
  •
  • Aaron Marshall 2 years ago
Are those helicopter blades really bent, or is that the CMOS sensor skewing?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Nope. The blades were as straight as. Dont ask me how it happened as I have no idea. Looks good though. Thanks for watching Aaron.

  • Rob Imbs plus 2 years ago
How in are you getting such clarity at all of those different frame rates when the camera shoots 29.97fps?? How are you under/over cranking in general with the 5d?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Everything was shot at 30 fps except for the timelapse stuff which is a series of still images put together as a quicktime movie. Cranking is done in FCP. The 5D is an amazing camera for its cost.

  • Phillip Summers 2 years ago
Hi Mike stunning images as usual! Do you use a set shutter speed? Thanks mate
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Hi Phil. I use full manual control when I shoot. I always look to shoot with the largest aperture so as to have a really shallow depth of field. It usually means the shutter speed is really quick but I dont know if this speed is true when you are shooting video. Video is a whole different animal from taking stills. Dont actually know how it works. If you find out please let me know.

  • Matt McGee 2 years ago
Wow. I have the 5D2 and am looking forward to using it for video.
How do I know if I have the updated firmware?
How do you control depth of field?
    What is the music?
    thanks. again, absolutely amazing...
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Hi Matt. The firmware on your 5D can be checked by going through your menus. I cant remember the new firmwares code but if you check Canons site you can get it. If it hasn't been loaded do it ASAP. It's very easy. If you dont download it you wont have full control of your camera as video mode would over-ride any settings you had set.

Depth of field is controlled by your aperture. The wider open your lens is the shallower the depth of field.

Music is by Hans Zimmer from the movie "The Thin Red Line"

    Thanks for watching.

  • Willy Bergsnov 2 years ago
The choppertrick can be done with high shutterspeed. The lack of blurring on the rotors give it away. You don’t have to do slowmo, because you only get them every other round or so.
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Dont ask me how the 5D did it but it was an awesome effect. You are probably correct with the shutter speed solution.

Wow, Michael you totally blew me away - I've seen a lot of 5D MkII footage since the camera came out (been lusting to upgrade my MkI) but that was really something else!
Your landscape images are incredible, so I shouldn't be surprised you shoot such amazing video as well - looking forward to seeing more of it. You really should be DP for a movie :)

    Thanks for sharing,

Can u tell me the name of the music in the background ?
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
Thanks Flavio. The music is by Hans Zimmer from the movie "The Thin Red Line"
  •
  • Nice work michael. I particularly like your non-tech approach. Setup your workflow, and run with it - don't care too much trying to remember the settings...
  • Michael Fletcher plus 2 years ago
I set the camera how I like it to look and press the button. Thats about as technical as I get. Good location and good light will always bring out a good shot.

    Thanks for watching Pete
