This is a wonderful tutorial, thank you! I have been putting together a resource for rigging in a BlenderArtists.org thread, and would be delighted if you joined in!

I've added the video here: blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?p=1399783#post1399783

    Cheers!

Awesome responses, guys. I really worked hard on putting this one together. It's so gratifying that you folks are getting the most out of it. Gord - cheers for the link, tho could you change the title to "blender rigging by Paul Caggegi"? Marcus Blair is the character being rigged, lol!

    Pretty nice rundown,
there is one important thing you forgot to mention. When enabling X-axis mirror, you don't press E to do a regular extrude, because that will not create a bone with a mirrored bone, but just a normal one.
Use SHIFT+E to do a mirror extrude from the center. Once you've extruded a bone that has a mirror on the other side, you can use regular extrude again, but not the first step.

People could keep extruding and don't get why the hell it isn't mirroring.

Very good point, thelowlander! I did happen to leave that out while speaking. Thankyou for pointing it out for future visitors, I appreciate it.

FINALLY, I learn that blender has tools rigging other then bones! I'm a HUGE Rigging Novice. Only rendered my first character (the hard way) and that was in 2005!!!

can someone PLEASE direct me to Video tutorials that explain everything shown here but MUCH slower and in more detail. No clue how constraints are used.

BTW, where can I download this video?

Hey Richard, I apologize for the speed of this tute. Is is meant for more intermediate blender users. If you head over to my blog: theprocessdiary.blogspot.com - I've provided links to plenty of slower, easier tutorials. Also, if you do a search here in Vimeo for "blender rig" you'll find heaps. I highly recommend the "Big Buck Bunny" video - rigging rinky. It's very straight forward and easy to understand. Every vimeo page has got a download. Usually lower right-hand collumn. Mine has "download .mp4" where you can download the original video I uploaded to vimeo.

    Thanks, Paul.
I did end up finding a Leg Rigging Tutorial. That's showed me a good bit about constraints. I've still had no luck getting the IK Foot bone to work for my model (not a leg but similar) due to the tut being made in an older version of Blender. But I'm sure I'll get it in no time.

I've been playing with Blender for at least 5 years now. sadly I've had no real chance to actually start learning it til recently. but I'm getting there. ;)
    Thanks again.

Oh and by 'Foot Bone' I meant the IK controller for the foot so it doesn't rotate while moving the leg. It never wants to move, just rotate as well as a few other bugs.
Since it doesn't work, I'm forced to stick to this rig. It makes animating a bit of a pain, but not too big yet.
