Twelve German submarines were sunk by allied planes during World War Two. Six of those were sunk by the squadron Jim Cummings was a part of. Cummings, a Bowling Green resident, joined the Navy at the age of 17 in 1943 and fought for three years, manning machine guns on Navy planes over the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
