My concept for subway station of New York City is the life story of common people. This subway station represents 99% of people living in New York City. It was also inspired by photographer Robert Frank who is famous for the street photographs. By the common place, I take pictures of dirty subway stations, instead of the cool America, because I want to seek the reality of the United States. The subway in New York City is the life place where 99% of people used every day, and I think there is the human life and human’s dreams.

In my work, I took a picture where there are many people in subway station, but they saw other ways and were isolated. On the other hand, I took another picture where there was a man who listened to music. He looks in meditation and I cannot feel he is solitary. These pictures’ situations show the reality of life in New York. I also believe these are a kind of Realism that I feel in New York City. - YONGKI HWANG
