Riding Long Beach Sharrows in Real Time
Laura and I ride the sharrows through Belmont Shore during a Saturday afternoon. It takes us 7 minutes to ride the .6 miles of Belmont Shore. That means we averaged 5mph! We barely broke 14mph at our fastest speed. As can be seen, there maybe a high volume of traffic but it is moving very slow. Slow enough, in fact, that bicycles can keep up.
The video also demonstrates that in such situations, the safest place to ride is in the center as it allows you to easily dodge parking cars.

Glenn Frank 5 months agoThanks for this great video demonstration of the green lanes! Only thing I hope is that this does not make drivers think this is legal to do only here where it is marked when in reality cyclists can legally take a lane like this even if it is not marked!
