Ski Mountaineer (Skimo) Racing, is a sport that has a very strong deep history in Europe. It is a sport that combines the endurance of an ultra marathon runner with the tactical ski abilities of an alpine ski racer mixed with the technical skills of a ski mountaineer. Over the past several years the sport has started to see substantial growth with in the US and now Canada, with both countries producing athletes that are challenging the Europeans at their own game. As the sport has grown in North America we have also started to see the level of competition grow as well. Last year the first ever North American Ski Mountaineering Championships took place in Crested Butte Colorado. This event brought out all the big hitters from both Canada and the US, as well as a few of the top dogs from Europe. It also happened to be the final stop on our month long road trip in the states during January 2012. The event consisted of 2 days of racing. With the first day being the Sprint Race, which is a short, all out race that has all the technical elements of a full race, but done in a fraction of the time. The second day was the Individual Race, which was over a 5000 ft course, which had some technical rock climbing, gruelling skinning and some solid descending. In total, it was a lot of very solid racing with some amazingly strong people. As well as a great ender to a excellent road trip.
