My thesis is investigating temporality in design through an exploration of the ephemeral. I have been looking at ideas of growth, decay and visual rhythms through altering the make-up of everyday materials to find how I can alter their disposition towards certain behaviour. How can these materials perform and how can they be manipulated?
I am interested in the event ‘encounter’ and the heightened intensity of experience that one has with something that is transitory. Just like a fleeting, passionate holiday romance where the mere awareness of temporality allows for a breakdown of boundaries we usually raise to protect ourselves; in removing the notion that something must exist permanently, the rules imposed by longevity are no longer relevant. I hope to harness that which might not be sensible for long-term design but can be choreographed into a short-term display with a time-based program.
