"IN A CAPPELLA" : THE LIZA COLBY SOUND
I can’t remember how I came across The Liza Colby Sound for the first time.
It was something out of "Alice and Wonderland", falling down the internet rabbit hole. Or like following a trail of website breadcrumbs. Nonetheless, I’m glad I came across this contemporary vintage rock & soul quartet.
I watched every live, goosebump inducing performance that I could find online shortly after.
Each performance was spewing with energy.
I saw their ferociously charismatic front woman treat each stage like she was responding to a pre-ordained dare by non-believers.
“I dare you to get on stage and drop down to a squat while you sing. I dare you to give it your all”.
I bought the “High Yellow” EP on iTunes and was blessed by their ruggedly sexy, funky music.
Around the inception of this “In A Capella” webseries, I decided to contact them to see if they would be interested in participating in a stripped down, minimalist performance that would show them in a rare form similar to a rehearsal or impromptu street performance. They graciously obliged. Liza Colby (lead vocals), Adam (guitar) and C.P Roth (drums) chose to perform "Shake" with the unfortunate absence of Alec Morton (bass) who was performing overseas at the time. Their manager asked me, “Have you seen us live”, and I bashfully lowered my head andresponded, “Only on youtube! Thanks to working a night shift on a TV show.” But I’ll definitely see them live very soon and you should too.
