Very funny, the pacing was excellent. Very reminiscent of the Pulp Fiction scene were Jackson and Travolta are having a convo before they bust in and lay the hurt down.
Justin AND Michael making a sweet team in the New York city. Awesome movie dudes, I looked at all the special effects and wondered, "What the hell, why haven't I tried that before!?"
Sadly my steadicam op friend who was going to shoot it was out in Tennessee for the week :( -- i dunno i dont mind a little shakiness. I also had forgotten to put on the optical image stabilizer so that didnt help at all
Such a simple idea, executed so well, it had that quality of instant engagement, I was hooked from the start and sad when it ended.
I think it just goes to show, you can have all the FX you want, the nicest camera, etc... but at the end of day, you just have to have that almost indefinable quality that engages with the audience from the beginning.
Justin, I've seen your work before, so I was expecting win. And it was. It was really simple and funny, and simple and funny make good combo. But what shocked me was how well the gunshot effects and the blood came out. THAT was win, my friend...
It's true! I did some prelim effects and then we had an indy mogul intern take a day and add in a bunch of great stuff like the pistol having some 'action' and bullet casings flying off the machine gun, etc - he did a bang-up job!
I'm a sucker for gangster themes, but this was a short-one-take-crime marvel, all the way from the cent-poker-gallon-dame-mundane dialog to the burst-out-in-shooting-action intervals. Great work and great atmosphere! Congrats.
This was really good, Justin. I too caught a bit of a nod to "Pulp Fiction", but still thought it was really good. I especially liked how you held the scene in time - there were no obviously gimmicky costume (hey, it's 1933 and a guy's got a "Mountain Dew" tshirt on!) issues - all well done.
Money.
Gunfight nicely done.
Steve
A cracking one take wonder which does it for me.
Very Pulp Fictiony.

More please! We want episodes!
I was hooked!
Also liked the irony of the talkies-aspect in this one.
That suitcase was kinda pimp....
