This was my original intention for this "experimental" sketch. The idea behind the work is all in the semiotics. I wanted to show symbols which i can convey to people without Keratoconus some of the feelings and experiences. I choose footage of windows to represent eyes, the rain on the windshields is meant to represent the noise and distortion caused by Keratoconus. The DATAMOSHING is also meant to represent that noise and distortion and it is a deliberate exercise in manipulating the digital video media in line with experimental lineage. For me experiencing Keratoconus is very much like driving in the rain, you're windshields wipers move but the rain keeps coming and there's nothing you can do to stop it. Hence I also added the footage of doctors doing corneal transplant surgery which is ultimately the end for most people with Keratoconus. The sound bites included those of the doctors and I also added some of people talking about their Keratoconus.
The class critique was today. There were some good comments which I agreed with. In general they were that 1. my work is heavy handed and could have been more abstracted. 2. the sound track was a little distracting and made the piece read like a video dj piece.
I agree with these comments in general but I want to state that I am a heavy handed artist by choice. I wanted this work to speak not just to the art students in my class but to the average person that finds this video on the web.
