Mingi is defined as being impure or cursed in certain African tribes in the Omo River Valley in Ethiopia, including the Kara and Hamar tribes. Unfortunately, these tribes participate in the tribal ritual of killing children that are declared Mingi. A child can be declared Mingi for the following reasons — Teeth Mingi, Girl Mingi, Woman Mingi and Twin Mingi. Being declared Mingi almost always means death of the child. The tribe will leave the child alone in the desert without food and water or will drown the child in the river.
On July 14th in Dus Village the Kara elders took the brave step to end Mingi in their culture. Omo Child was there to film the special day.
