“Remember the former things, those of long ago; I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please. From the east I summon a bird of prey; from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose. What I have said, that will I bring about; what I have planned, that will I do.”
Isaiah 46:9-11 (NIV)
Why Study Prophecy?
The Quantity — Almost one-third of the Bible is prophetic in nature.
The Uniqueness — Only book that contains fulfilled prophecies
Validation of Scripture — Fulfilled prophecy is one of the
best evidences that the Bible is the inspired Word of God.
Validation of Jesus — The prophetic scriptures validate
Jesus as Who He said He was — namely, God in the flesh.
Revealer of the Future — Tells us what God wants us to know about the future.
1. Warns Us Of Coming Judgment So We Will Turn To God
“Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.”
1 Thessalonians 5:1-3 (NIV)
“Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that His kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?”
Romans 2:4 (NLT)
“You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.” Matthew 24:44 (NLT)
2. I Should Live Differently Than Those Without Hope
“But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, gets drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.”
1 Thessalonians 5:4-8 (NIV)
“For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth. But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for Him to return as our Savior.” Philippians 3:18-20 (NLT); Titus 2:11-14
“You have had enough in the past of the evil things that godless people enjoy—their immorality and lust, their feasting and drunkenness and wild parties, and their terrible worship of idols.” 1 Peter 4:3 (NLT)
3. Prophecy Assures Me That Jesus Is Coming Back For Me
“For God chose to save us through our Lord Jesus Christ, not to pour out His anger on us. Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when He returns, we can live with Him forever. So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:9-11 (NLT)
“Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of His return is drawing near.”
Hebrews 10:24-25 (NLT)
I will be prepared for Christ’s return:
[ ] Accepting God’s gift of salvation
[ ] Turning from my past lifestyle
[ ] By bringing friends to find and follow Jesus
