    i really love your graphic-style!
in my opinion the storytelling could be a little tighter but the graphicstyle rocks!
  • how tight is the storytelling in your dreams?
  • Amanda Zoe 2 years ago
I agree with Simon. I feel that the whole "dream' part would make a good film in and of itself.... the guy falling asleep in the beginning and waking up at the end just seems like an add on trying to 'justify' the weirdness. But the surreal space world is so fleshed out that you don't really need to justify its reality.
I care more about the little spaceman than the human guy in the beginning!

  • Mats Andren 2 years ago
that was amazing! loved the end bit, without really understanding what the hell is going on =D this might sound arrogant, but how come there are some things that are nice and snappy and some (a few) parts that feel interpolated and floaty? is that consciously done for pacing or software-related or whats going on?
  • Malcolm Sutherland plus 2 years ago
yeah, to a certain degree i was trying to keep the pacing kind of slow... with this level of detail in the artwork, faster pacing made the film feel psychotic. That said, this was my first "real" attempt at a narrative film, so I also don't really know what I am doing yet!

I was completely enthralled by that, the animation/art was incredible. Was that a comment on consumerism? this is just an interpretation, but for me it seemed as though he was hooked on a drug/fast food or something of the addictive nature that could never quite satisfy his insatiable hunger. It was as if he had bought a big mac that looked good in the advertisement but when he opens up the cardboard box he finds a piece of totally un-nutritious piece of crap but eats it any way. Is that what you were going for? was there some other meaning or was it just wonderfully abstract?

    Either way, i loved it
  • Malcolm Sutherland plus 2 years ago
i had no specific comment on consumerism, but yes, there is something there about the restless external focus of the mind in general.... it is like an addiction! maybe consumerism is more like a symptom. But I didnt intend to have a central message behind the film, it is more like an intuitive reflection.
    cheers!
  • Julie Fredrickson 1 year ago
I'm shocked that this was unintentional... I think your illustration of this "restless external focus" always searching, wanting/needing, and the desperate wasting (with oppositely swelling ego and resulting need) that comes from not feeding yourself from within is RIGHT ON! I was very impressed by this film, and your intuitive skills. Bravo!

A few things... so awesome. The sound track reminded me of Madam Tutli-Putli. Best style of animation, dark, strange, somewhat abstract with no spoken "words". Makes you think and want to watch it again. Deffinatly inspiring to me to make my own animations soon enough.

This is outstanding. Your take on Melies' own Astronomers Dream is fantastic. It took me a while to figure out where I knew the story from but it clicked after watching it a second time. I am so glad I found your work on this website. Looking forward to browsing through more of your work :)
  • Malcolm Sutherland plus 2 years ago
I have never seen Melies' film... I had seen the image of the moon with the rocket in the eye -- I only just learned that is what the film was called when I googled "The Astronomers Dream"/// , there are similarities?
  • Jonathan Riner 2 years ago
There are some similarities. The first and most obvious, from the Melies film, was the astronomer falling asleep and the imagining of the moon gobbling up his instruments. In your animation it is not the moon but a manifestation of the little creature that does the gobbling. I enjoyed yours much more and the fact that you had not seen Melies' work makes your animation that much better to me.
  • Malcolm Sutherland plus 2 years ago
Man, I love when synchronicities like that happen
Makes me feel more connected to it all
anyway, most of the outside influence on this one came from Mayan / Aztec art and mythology, (and japanese too) but even then it was pretty loose, I wasnt trying to quote it in any particular way, mainly I was just "riffing".
    cheers!
  •
  • Amanda Zoe 2 years ago
were you looking at MesoAmerican Art while coming up with the visual style?
The art direction and cyclical story itself is very Aztec.
