In Part 4 of Canon 5D Mark II Audio Exposed, I compare the Microtrack II, Zoom H4n, BeachTek DXA-5D, and the juicedLink CX 231 when recording foley sounds with a Rode NT1-A large condenser microphone.

The only processing of the comparison audio was changing gain to match levels. You can download the uncompressed comparison audio here: p3pictures.com/audio_5d2/AudioExposed_Part4_Foley.zip

Hi, Thanks for posting the audio vids. I am having trouble with the 5dmkII auto adjusting the gain while recording. I currently use a Sennheiser ew11g2 wireless pluged directly into the mic jack in the camera. It seems that when I begin to record the level starts out high then levels out then goes back up when I stop talking. Is there any way I can get around this? If it owuld help I can post an example of this.
Thanks in advance for your help & advice.

    Hi Dale,

You just need to load the latest Magic Lantern firmware into your camera before recording. The version released last night (0.1.5) has large fonts, can read a configuration file that you can customize for your needs, and it resolved a problem that put small clicks in the audio when the signal was loud.

You can get the firmware and learn how to use it here:
    magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Magic_Lantern_Firmware_Wiki

The signal from the EW100 G2 rack mount receiver is very hot, so no preamp is needed. The firmware should be all you need.

Thanks again for the info. I'm looking at the H4N. How are people using it in the field though, with booms....?
I've heard some people say mount it to the MKII via the Hot Shoe, boom guy wears it on his belt, some have tried to attach it to the boompole...
    What are you suggestions?
    Thanks

Best practice is to plug in an external mic and put it on a boom. Or you could use a lavalier and clip it on the lapel. The key is to use a good mic and get it close to the subject.
