Welcome to Earth Science!
This course is an overview of planet Earth and the materials and processes which extend from Earth's core to the outer reaches of the solar system. Only recently have scientists begun to understand the complexity of our Earth. In fact, it was only a few hundred years ago that scientists discovered our planet was just a tiny part of an enormous galaxy, which in turn is a small part of an even greater universe. By its nature, Earth Science addresses a broad and voluminous body of subject matter. By studying Earth Science, we learn about ourselves and our universe.
We live in an age of constant scientific discovery. There is always something new to learn in the ever growing field of Earth Science. Developing a degree of scientific literacy will help you understand issues that you come across daily in the media, make informed choices, appreciate how the natural laws of science influence your life, and give you the skills to approach most matters in a reasoned and analytical manner. Scientific problem solving and analytical skills are vital assets in an increasingly competitive world. Studying science teaches a person how to question, methodologically carry out investigations, and communicate results—all skills useful in any line of work. A strong scientific enterprise is essential to our economic and social development.
