David Weinberg Photography Presents: Everyday Always Trying, the first group exhibition by The Coat Check, a new curatorial project.
Everyday Always Trying explores the outer limits of photography as vernacular in a world that is punctuated by the ephemeral. What binds these photographs in one room, regardless of their content or influence, is their position as makers. These four emerging artists see the world quickly and execute on impulse, intuitively inspired by that which surrounds them. The content is a summation of their visual language influenced by memory, captivation and strange possibilities. They shoot from the hip and produce with feverish haste. They are always trying, everyday seeking visual connections and photographic possibilities. Informal yet excogitative, the everyday seeps into their memory as image and the artists extract compelling stills for further contemplation. Everyday Always Trying presents its audience with a photographic testimony of the artist's passionate drive to create instinctually, without a preconceived notion, the fleeting moment and catalogued personal history.
David Brandon Geeting is inspired by cheap entertainment, middle class luxuries, and assemblage as an improvisational remedy for boredom. He received his BFA in photography at the School of Visual Arts in 2011 and currently resides in Brooklyn. David's work has been published and exhibited widely in New York City, Europe and Asia.
Bobby Scheidemann shoots intuitively to create a narrative of his surroundings through studio constructions of ephemera. His work has been exhibited in Texas, Chicago and internationally in group exhibitions such as UNTITLED at the Fish Factory in Falmouth, Cornwall UK and Seedless Show curated by Wandering Bears Collective. Bobby received his BFA in Photography from Texas State University in 2011. He currently resides in Brooklyn while directing an online music video project called kitchen_concert.
Matt Austin is a Chicago based artist and arts educator driven by spontaneity, collaborative community, and truly wonderful friendships. Matt received his BFA in photography from Columbia College Chicago in 2009, and has exhibited extensively in Chicago including Catherine Edelman Gallery, NEXT: Invitational Exhibition of Emerging Art, and the MDW Art Fair. He is the 2012 recipient of the Illinois Artists' Council Grant and services much of the Chicago arts community as a staff member of the ACRE Artist Residency and a co-founder of Tasteful ACRE Installation Services Team, an art installation project.
Bobby Doherty works best when he has absolutely no idea what he's doing. Operating in the tradition of street photography, Bobby makes photographs of everything under the sun, just so long as it makes you think "oh, that's weird." His work has been featured in numerous publications and blogs including I Heart Photography and Vice Magazine. He has exhibited in Los Angeles, New York and internationally, including the Steinsland Berliner Gallery in Stockholm, Sweden. Bobby lives and works in New York City.
The Coat Check is a new curatorial project housed at David Weinberg Photography's back galleries. The Coat Check aims to showcase young emerging artists and conjunctively allow them a platform of visibility in the greater Chicago arts community. Curated by Matthew Avignone, Everyday Always Trying is the project's pilot exhibition. The show consists of framed works, a rotating slide show of photographs that supplement the artist's current projects, as well as a newsprint featuring interviews by Sixty Inches From Center designed to highlight the artists as individuals. Everyday Always Trying will be located in galleries B and C and will be exhibited in parallel with David Weinberg's Spent: Portraits of the Exhausted in gallery A.
