Mersea Island gets its name from old English, meaning 'Island of the pool'. Mersea faces south to the River Blackwater - east to the River Colne - west to the Strood channel and north to the Pyefleet channel.
Every summer the rivers' craft embark on sailing in the annual Mersea Week run by a joint committee from the Dabchicks Sailing and the West Mersea Yacht Club.
Featuring footage from onboard Essex Smack Maria CK21, this film illustrates a week encompassing racing for traditional Essex Smacks and Classics mostly from the east coast of England amongst modern sailing classes.
