Prevalent thinking equating Sex Work to crime has robbed Sex Workers of their right to a safe and decent life, subjecting them instead to violence, discrimination, stigma and exacerbated poverty. Policy makers, and the media, ignore the situation Sex Workers are in, or why they start doing this kind of work. This film, and the book associated to it, attempt to redress this.
Ashodaya Samithi is a Sex Worker association based in Mysore, India. This short film and the book associated to it came out of their desire that we document their real lives. Ashodaya has demonstrated their evidence-based approach is the correct one. By creating an enabling environment for Sex Workers to reclaim their self-esteem, it provides them with health, security, and the capacity to take control of their lives. Its academy is changing the lives of Sex Workers across India and Asia. Ashodaya is recognized as one of the great HIV prevention programs in the world.
With this project we hope to reach the actors of the debate ands the public at large. This is matter of public health, of saving millions of lives from disease and poverty. The rights of Sex Workers cannot be ignored any longer.
