As within the business world, university offers many opportunities for collaboration across its diverse disciplines. These opportunities provide the possibility to enhance student experience and increase the networks of those parties who elect to participate.

Two such projects involve the development of two mobile learning Apps called ‘Puzzlehunt’ and ‘FieldWork’ which are a collaboration across the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science and the Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering. We will demonstrate the development of the mobile learning experience and discuss the elements of ‘engagement’ and ‘learning’ which sit at the core of the design and implementation of the projects. The ‘Puzzlehunt’ concept was developed to playfully orient new students to La Trobe’s many social and learning spaces, facilities and resources. The ‘FieldWork’ App, developed with Innovation Project Funding, was designed to give the student conducting fieldwork, the capacity to plan, record and interpret, their rural, environmental or urban experiences and share and present it to their classmates and to their lecturer for assessment.

A strong motivation for the student to produce a high quality outcome lies with the understanding that student work will be used as a real world tool and made available for download on the iTunes App store. The end product provides students with a demonstrable outcome they can refer to when applying for work in their chosen field.
