In this video, Mary Field from Winnipeg, MB, talks about the evolution of Opticianry that she has experienced in her 40-year career as an Optician and a leader in the profession.
Early advances in technology and lens materials established Opticians as an integral part of the overall healthcare team. As more lens options and frame styles became available, the emphasis gradually shifted from healthcare to fashion.
Mary describes how the profession of Opticianry has now come full circle with the emphasis once again on the health needs of the patient. The addition of unregulated providers, along with an aging population, has forced Opticians to re-examine their scope of practice and define how best to ensure the vision health of the general public. This is a time when Opticians need to focus on their core skills and scientific knowledge and make that the focal point of what Opticians do for their patients.
We hope you will share this video in your practices and industry events and share Opticians' passion to "Become an expert and love what you do."
