The arteries of our cities pulse rhythmically with the ebb and flow of humanity and machine creating a soundscape that has evolved over time. This film shot from a moving tram in San Francisco in 1905, shows a city in technological transition. For a fleeting moment the sound of the horse mixes with that of the motor, an audio segue that would usher in the ubiquity of motorised transport. Decades later a music would evolve in the Motor City that would harness the cadence of machines as it's heartbeat. This music has become universal, capturing the unique rhythm of every city in which it is produced.
