Blake, that is just so good! How did you do it? Love to watch a tutorial on the actual process of the, what looks like, a very complicated edit!
  • Blake Whitman staff 4 months ago
    Thanks.

Its a complicated process. First I had to edit the music and cut it into pieces to make it shorter and fit the vibe I was going for. took a 9min song and made it 2:36 seconds. Then I separated all the photos into two groups: portrait and landscape. Then I place the portrait and landscape photos in two different video tracks on top of each other in Final Cut. Then I go through and mark the beats of the music and lock the song in the timeline so it can't ever move. Then I spend about 7 hours playing with the rhythm and flow until I get tired of doing it ;)

Man, that shows great patience...it paid off.

Of course, I only use film cameras for stills, no iphone. I don`t think that would work as film is more precious than pixels...the build up of random mundanity into a beautiful whole in this series would have a totally different feel.

    Blake,

This is really tremendous. I love the image, the editing and... wow, the stamina you have! Just out of curiosity, how long did it take you to arrange all these photographs? And I'm really surprised at the poetic quality of the iPhone's camera. Did you do much retouching?
  • Blake Whitman staff 4 months ago
thanks Fredo. took a while, maybe about 10 hours. a lot of that is just organizing pictures and planning it out. but i edited it so all the photos are sequential. and I didn't retouch any of them.

i really love the iphone quality. for me its the correct mix of low-fi and accessibility that I have come to cherish.
  •
  • Fredo Viola plus 4 months ago
