Excerpt from the poems of Dmitry Mizgulin read by Boris Burlyaev.

Made for "Russian hour" and it's all in Russian. So if someone wants to translate and do subtitles for me...

The full unabridged poems run to 30 minutes for all of them.

This is one line each from about 10 separate poems.
Shot on the Canon 5dmkII

Sound recorded separately.

Please read my detailed blog for more info on the shoot, what I used etc...

Too bad I don't understand russian. But who need to undertand it, with such a great film ! Like the mood and the light candles, the way you use DOF and the smooth camera movements.
What is beautiful with poetry is that even you don't understand the words, you can appreciate the music phrases.
To finish, thanks very much, Philip, to explain the way you do on your personal website. It's always informative to know the tips and material you use to made this piece of art. Bravo !!!

Oh, I forgot to say that it seems to have a little problem with the footer Vimeo embed video on you're blog. It's always written, even if you refresh it : "Sorry, there was a problem loading this video". Is it me, Vimeo, or the embeded ?
  • Philip Bloom plus 5 months ago
thanks for comments and letting me know. I have tried on Safari and Firefox and it works fine for me. It must be some odd Vimeo issue. Will see if anyone else is having the same problem. P

    Greetings,

Stupendous catchlight at 2:53. Intentional or accidental?

Is his audio Zoom H4n? Sounds too good to be H4n.
Nevermind, I read the blog. 744t, cracking.

Very nice pictures, incredibly amazing how it's now possible to use candle light as the only lighting source with digital cameras due to the size of the sensor chip and the sensitivity of the CMOS, combined with a really fast lens.
Stanley Kubrick had to get a special lens from NASA to shoot Barry Lyndon using candles almost 35 years ago, but on 35mm film!!!

Allow me one minor critical remark:
While I think the DoF is amazing and really focusses our attention on the narrator and the poems (though most of us don't understand Russian), I really feel it's almost a bit too much in some shots. Of course I don't know what the client ordered, but on a personal level I think it'd be nice to see a bit more of the background, especially to appreciate the beautiful church interiors (which I know after looking at the production photos on your blog).
I think some variation in this regard would add even more to the overall feel of the film, and let us appreciate the clips with a very shallow DoF even more (again, fitting into the meanings of the poems etc.).

Anyway, just my 2 cents, very nice work as usual indeed!

Hi Nino. Each Poem has two shots. A wide and a tight. You are seeing the tight on each one.
  • Nino Leitner 5 months ago
Ah, now I get it :-)

Hope we get to see the finished piece as well!

i just watched it back. There are 3 wide shots in the church in this edit out of the 16 wide shots filmed in total. Even the wide shots have some shallow DOF, I want to draw the attention to Boris and his words and not be distracted by the surroundings. They are there to give us beautiful backgrounds but they are so ornate and detailed the danger seeing them in pin sharp focus as well as Boris could distract you from the words.

Appreciate the feedback Nino. Good points to raise.

Would it not have been very difficult to get deeper focus anyways since the wide apertures are required with such low levels of light? Is there a way to shoot night shots with deeper DOF that I am not thinking about?
  • Philip Bloom plus 5 months ago
I had a lot of play on the ISOs. I was quite low ISO for most, I could have gone higher to get a deeper DOF

Philip, what lenses did you use in this video?

Oh, and what devices did you use for sound?

I love how I don't need to understand Russian to be moved by this piece. The choice of music is superb, I would love to know what it is!

Also If its not too much trouble I'm really curious to know which focal lengths you shot the first 3 shots at, and the last one too.

Love the shallow dof Philip keep rockin it :)

Really great stuff. I'm liking the gutsy lighting from below in places too, a brave choice that worked out nicely and more importantly suited the piece.

More 30p footage please Phillip, keep it coming
