The director, Ashley Dean of Broken Pixel, had this to say about the inspiration and background for the video:
"The video for '99 Stairs' grew out of the artists' mutual love for masks and pixilation. An old box for an artificial Christmas tree was the starting point, attached to tin of quality street cut open with a tin opener. From this ramshackle beginning, the beautiful and bizarre illustration and cardboard work of Kristyna Baczynski brought the creation to life. Greig, Niall and Ashley took the designs and iterated another two rotating heads. We attached these heads to the infinitely bepatienced Wu of Stalking Horse and started out Pixilation work. The process involves the minute movement of the human body over a series of hundreds of frames, giving us a unique and unsettling performance that we then fed into the edit. The final phase involved shooting metallic acrylic paint spinning around a fish bowl with a slow motion camera. These backgrounds gave us the tools to collage together the video for 99 Stairs.
