How to convert the H264 files into an editable format.

This tutorial is for Final Cut Studio 2 users. If you are using a MAC and do not have Final Cut Pro installed the codecs will not be available to you. Use something equivalent like DVCPROHd.

    Hello Phill,

I had been using DVCPRO HD which works fantastic on my intel MacBook Pro. My question is: would you recommend transcoding either AVCHD or H.264 files DVCPROHD?
Or Are you trans coding to XDCAM because it may hold better the video information?

    Thanks
  • DVCPROHD is a less compressed format than XDCAM. I used both and DVCPROHD is far better quality wise

This is what I've been waiting for Philip.. for some reason the mpeg Streamclip I downloaded does not have an XDCAM EX option.. only XDCAM HD.. hmm.. I wonder if I have the right app.
I am able to transcode fine using compressor and the pro res 422.. my issue is encoding after the edit.. the video comes out looking overcompressed and contains weird artifacts.. unlike the films you and Mike Fletcher upload which are very close to the quality of the original files..
Thank you so much for these tutorials!!!

You have the right app, you just don't have the right codec installed.
  • You should be able to do log and transfer directly from FCP

I'm having this same problem as William, but on a PC. I actually have a Sony PMW-EX1, so I have all the codecs and drivers, but there is no XDCAM export option in Streamclip.

Is there a way to install codecs for Streamclip? Maybe a plugin or something? Thanks!
  • Mark Rigler 4 months ago
    Anyone know the answer?
  • Sean Duran 4 months ago
I even emailed the creator of Streamclip. No answer.

I'll just stick to pre-rendering all my footage in Premiere. Been working just fine so far.
  • Philip Bloom plus 4 months ago
With FCP you need to have FCP installed to get the XDCAM codecs. With a PC you need whatever editing software does the same for you.
  • Mark Rigler 4 months ago
I can edit EX1 in Edius and Premiere but XDCAM codecs don't appear.
  • Sean Duran 4 months ago
I haven't heard of anyone being able to get XDCAM to work in Streamclip for PC yet. I have it working in Vegas and Premiere, but SC still does not have the export option.
  • Xdcam on EDIUS only available from EDIUS BROADCAST or above

did you install the klite mega codec pack
  • Sean Duran 4 months ago
Yep, I have the K-Lite Mega Pack.

It's worth noting that the ProRes codec is
showing up on the codec list in mpegstream clip as
    ProRes and ProRes (stacked)

I have found after testing that the topmost ProRes is HQ
and the ProRes on bottom is non-hq.

Hi PB, I downloaded Mpeg streamclip already but there is no Apple XDCAM EX in the compression menu. There are only limited types of compressions. What did I do wrong?

here you find also a workflow, which i use for final cut pro 5.1 . it works pretty good with my " old " mac book 2.16 Intel dual ..."
its written in german, but you can easliy adapt it, i think..

You might be able to edit the transformed video (DVCPROHd) in FCP in real time but you will be introducing twice as many conversion artifacts (one to DVCPROHd and one to H2.64 when exporting). Using Pro Res 422 is probably a better choice as an editing format, no temporal compression or reduction in chroma resolution, that means less artifacts.
  • Jörg Brönnimann 5 months ago
    i agree.
final cut studio 5.1 does not have the pro res 422.
or is there a way to upload this codec to final cut?

  • import in DVCPROHD but don´t export in H264. It´s a terrible codec. Once you have it in DVCPROHD why would you want to downgrade the clip in quality?

Hi! can you tell me how to edit 5d mark footage in Adobe Premiere (PC operating system, XP). What are the steps. thanx!

  • Stephen Dampf 5 months ago
Hi Philip, why is it important to import the footage onto an external hard drive and not an internal one? Surely the internal drive would be faster?
  • Robert Lewis 2 months ago
I have the same question. Is this to reduce read/write hang ups?

    Hi Phil,

You are on a fast track, just remember the only fast track is yourselves. Keep it up!

What about transcodeing from H264 into something less processor heavy, edit, then 'Replace Footage' the transcoded video with the original H264 when ready to export, thus skipping out the quality loss a transcode entails? Ive used this technique and it seems to work well.

Loving your work and FStop academy stuff.
  • Giulio Sciorio plus 2 months ago
    Kieron,

In your experience what would you recommend for a codec that is less heavy?

    Thanks.
  • Kieron Howard 2 months ago
Ive used DV codec successfully, obviously you need the HDD space for it, but its quick to transcode and doesn't take up as much processor power as H264 . And its free.

Prores Ive heard works well, as does Cineform HD, although not free.

    Hope that helps.
  • Kieron Howard 2 months ago
I use Premiere Pro and have just been informed that FCP doesn't have "replace footage" option . So .... yeah. For this to work youll need to be using PP. Unless Im wrong and FCP does have it.
  • Kieron Howard 2 months ago
Although thinking about it more you could transcode all your source files, move the originals somewhere else , and then make sure the transcoded files had exactly the same name as the source files. Then when you are ready to export swap them over.
  • Chris Higham 2 months ago
I tried that once and didn't have much luck. It wasn't that easily tricked by just giving it the same name. It must look at all the other aspects like codec etc I guess

EUREKA finally a good converter and totaly FREE!
Thanks Philip for this cristal clear tutorial. Same settings work also perfect for reducing Xacti HD2000 FullHD 1920x1080 60 fields per second to Quicktime .MOV files for Windows + Vegas 9! Now waiting for new Sony updates to save these long conversion times!
  • Mark Rigler 4 months ago
what quicktime setting did you use?

hey, can you help me...i 'm a video editer and i brought a xacti hd2000 cam to myself, but i can't handle the clips in vegas...i use your tutorial to convert the clips but in h264 clips the vegas can handle then...what is the best format to convert?

Great tutorial. I used Compressor but will look out for the package you mentioned. For my film, shot on the Canon 500D I transcoded to XDCam HD 25p so I could edit 25fps. Images still look good even though they were shot at 20fps. Look forward to using the 7D though. All the best George

Get this: I originally batch converted 4 gigs of source footage from FCP and it took 1 Hour & 15 mins.

I used MPEG Streamclip and it literally took 20 mins. AMAZING!

Thanks for this great tutorial and helping me save a ton of time.
