Rarely does a single artist impact the appearance of a city. Yet with hundreds of gates, fences, balconies, steprails, and window grills, Charleston has been decorated by the hands of Philip Simmons. He was one of the world’s most renowned master blacksmiths.
In 2005, when the Philip Simmons Foundation and Sunhead Projects partnered to create a multi-media, comprehensive archive of Mr. Simmons’ work, it was immediately discovered that there was a treasure trove of over 800 pieces that desperately needed to be electronically catalogued and, most importantly, updated to reflect any movement of ironwork by Mr. Simmons that was previously identified. There was also the possibility that some works were overlooked in the first drive around.
Today, the Philip Simmons Documentation Project encompasses the design for an interactive database, video/DVD, a coffee-table style book of photographed pieces, and on-the-ground self-guided tours.
To date, no project has utilized multi-media and interactive technology to comprehensively capture, archive and preserve the works of Philip Simmons.
The following pages share our vision and a layout of the collaboration.
We thank you for your interest, consideration and support for this project.
