I had a quick questions for you (sorry I'm not really interested in buying your camera but rather your "upgrade" to the 5D.
I too wanted to make the switch to all 5D's and sell my HVX200's and XLH1's, however I've gone through 3 different 5D bodies and all had problems. All 3 had stuck/hot pixels. I definitely don't want to scare you but am very curious if you have seen this issue before on your camera? The test I conduct with each of my cameras is throw it on 6400 iso and record for the full 12 minutes. (I do this 2 times outdoors, or in higher temperature areas). I know you would rarely record with 6400 iso but what has happened to mine is the hotter the camera the more apparent the stuck/hot pixels are in lower iso's. For one of my full shooting days I can see using this camera for 32 GB of footage for 6 hours. It generates a lot of heat and the pixels start to show as low as 640 iso.
I hope you have a different story about your camera than mine. I have even seen very expensive and very produced work on Vimeo with hot and stuck pixels. I don't really think it's moral to charge clients fully when their equipment isn't working 100%. I've learned too shoot around my bad pixels (for the most part, just by filming outdoors and in sunny areas) but still am very hesitant in going all the way for a switch in cameras.
I thoroughly enjoy working with the 5D and playing with all the lens options. I hope whole heartedly that these problems can be fixed and of course 24p = )
Just wondering your experience - sorry for the long post. (should have posted that here... sorry for the double)
Thanks for the warning. I have heard about a few problems the 5D has, but so far ours seems to be working very well and I haven't noticed any bad pixels.
The 5D is really just the camera that will hold us over until RED finally releases their Scarlet, so I'm not too worried about using this in the long run :)
Personally I think the EX1 is 100 times better than the 5D.
You should see if you can borrow one for a day or something. I bought the 5D before selling our EX1 just to be sure, but now I'm totally convinced.
I suppose if you're used to a D-SLR like I was (I had a Canon 40D), then it'll be an easy transition.
Keep in mind that focusing and zooming is hard to do. And there is no over/under cranking like the EX1.
"All I want is everything"..!! LOL!
Anyway, all the mark II videos are OVERGROWN with shallow DOF.. I mean really... it is too much. It has it's place but it seems like everyone is going full overboard now with the DOF....LOL I hope that is not the future of video.
Mark II has PP as well. They aren't as detailed as the EX, but there's still quite a bit you can do. I shot some comparison stuff before we sold our EX1, so as soon as TZ is back up you'll get to see it :)
And do you do guest spots? lol, I mean, well, I'm just kicking around here for another week and need some film-making ideas, need anything doing? ;)
ps. you can see i'm bored, I already spent a week making the jib...
I just got my 7D today. And after using a Mark II for a while, I couldn't be happier. It just feels so much better, like it's actually made for video. It's a tiny bit noisier than the Mark II, but the quality is still absolutely amazing. I absolutely recommend the 7D over the Mark II if you want it for filmmaking.
