This Persona Project’s concept it’s based into three main issues that I identified in Ingmar Bergman’s original production, which I will address later in this writing. Persona is a film, which in the opening scene has a lot of elements that work more as icons or representations rather than just random images put them together. In this case Bergman deals with subjects such as evil and good, dead and life, man and woman, love and hate, innocence and sarcasm; this kind of duality is in pretty much all the opening scene in which we worked, and it’s a fact that I used as well this kind of duality, but I restricted into three main subjects, which they are sex, death and dementia.
I choose this issues and used them to make a statement of how the use of images as loaded icons are much more greater and rich in order to make an accurate sound design. Even that, the scene does not has people having sex, I identified that the icons (images) shown in the beginning are very load with sexual suggestions, that it is the case of the erected penis, a turning bright light bowl, and the animation in which the girl grabs her breast as she moves. Reason why I putted a very distorted woman screaming while having sex, which represents these non explicit sexual content that Bergman decided not to emphasize, but that it is there.
The next one is “death”, which can be traced in the image of the spiders, as is consider as icon of evil and death, also in more explicit way are the dead people in a kind of morgue and the slaughter of the lamb, contents that are very emblematic and controvert, but in my opinion the sound designed for this images in the original production does not represent the intensity nor the intension of what it was to meant to say. Reason why I also added a “crow” sound and placed in different places as it represents the “death” which can also be interpreted as a “figurative end” of events. In addition to the death people scene, I made the introduction more intense with some “Gregorian chants” alike chorus, but with an obscurity surrounding sound. Also I decided not to put a “funny tune” in the part where the comic and the funny actors are, as it does not represent a part on my concept, so I left it as part of the mute rolling scene’s sound, but added a heart bit as a representation that even that they “do not have a voice”, they exist and are a part of a whole.
And the third issue, it is the term dementia, as I identified several elements in the scene, as the person nailing another with a hammer, which in this times, only a dement will do it, also I put some distorted laughs of two persons as a simulation of dementia of what they are doing, even that the scene suggest that it is more focus into inflict pain, the fact is that is an act of dements; also I used the scene of the boy in which he apparently is listen to something, or something it is impatient him out, so I used this suggesting movements he is making in order to put him into a kind of psychotic scenario, in which he is losing his mind, hearing noises, music and at the end hallucinating, reason why I compose some kind of burlesque tune, with an added piano and a whistling phrasing, alluding to a picturesque and exaggerated “nut’s song”. And as result, we have that the overall concept of this project is a cynical representation of what are the humans’ fears and desires.
