AngloGold Ashanti is considering putting a processing plant for their proposed goldmine 'La Colosa' 80km away from the mine in Doima, in the municipality of Piedras, Tolima, Colombia. Hundreds of local people and environmental campaigners came out to protest on the day before Christmas for fear of the environmental and social damage the project will cause in the area - which is mostly dedicated to agriculture, particularly rice growing. Processing gold requires a lot of water and uses a lot of toxic chemicals, often including cyanide. The site of the mine at Cajamarca has also attracted protests.
