The head of the United Nations tells Iran to stop threatening Israel. According to Ynet News, UN chief Ban Ki-moon met Iran's president and supreme leader in Tehran to urge them to take concrete steps to prove the country's nuclear program is peaceful and to use their influence to help end Syria's 17-month conflict. Ban's spokesman, Martin Ne-sirky, said that in Ban's separate meetings with Ahmadinejad and Supreme Leader Khamenei, he said their verbal attacks on Israel were offensive, inflammatory and unacceptable.

Hurricane Isaac has already caused losses of $2.5 billion. According to Reuters, Hurricane Isaac has caused up to $1 billion in economic losses for offshore energy properties and up to $1.5 billion in insured losses onshore in Louisiana and neighboring states. While the estimates are early and likely to rise, they suggest that Isaac, now downgraded to a tropical storm, will ultimately be a much less damaging storm than 2005's Hurricane Katrina, a larger and more powerful cyclone that hit the same region.

Cases of West Nile Virus rise by 40% in one week. According to the Associated Press, federal health officials say that West Nile virus cases are up 40 percent since last week and are on pace to rival the record years of 2002 and 2003. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 1,590 cases of the mosquito-borne disease and 66 deaths so far this year. Half of the cases are in Texas.
