Surfers at Lyall Bay, Wellington, New Zealand on Friday the 17th of July, 2009.
Lyall Bay is right next to Wellington Airport, and is Wellington's most popular surfing location. It's an inconsistent beach break, but when it does get the right swell and wind it can produce really long clean left hand rides.
I went out later in the afternoon, and the water was really damn cold. The water temperature is usually around 12°C/54°F this time of year, which always helps keep the crowds down. In summer the bay can get packed with hundreds of surfers, sometimes over a hundred competing for the wall break alone.
If you do get to Lyall Bay, check out Maranui cafe. It's awesome.
