See all Show me
I haven't had ANY time to make a video in the last few months to add to my video journal here on vimeo because I'm in the middle of creating a short film. I wish I had more time! :)

Last weekend, however, I was invited to a wedding anniversary camping trip. I don't know the people in the group very well, but I wanted to make a little video as a kind gesture to them for being kind enough to ask me to come.

I had too much to drink and wasn't able to really focus on my shots or concept. I had a couple hours this week to hurry an edit of the footage I drunkenly took, hehe. Here's my little weekend.

Sorry if the video isn't up to snuff, but I hope you feel the love of the experience as I introduce you to some of my inspiring new friends.

Hehe, thank you! I hope all is well with you, too! I wasn't really that confident enough to post this video, but I think the feeling of it makes me happy, so I threw it on vimeo anyway. Thanks for the welcome back! :)

I don't know how you do it, but you blow me off my chair again :-) .. amazing video!

Ur camera skills are great and ur color gradings are allways perfect.

Good luck with ur short film!

And btw.. I did feel the love in the video ;-)

    Thank you!

The short film should be done in a couple weeks (I hope).

That's awesome you felt the love! hehe Thanks for checking it out!

nice one. again :D. really curious about your short film!
  • Matthew Brown plus 4 months ago
Thanks, man! The short will be up in a couple weeks or so, and it'll be around 15 minutes (it's called Aphids). It's pretty much more of a "practice" film to a better concept and execution of a short film I'm doing this fall. I hope I get a ton of feedback for Aphids on vimeo so I can get it nicely polished and put into festivals. I'll keep you posted...it's kind of like a children's film with an intense, sometimes over-the-top, feeling to it. I wish we had more time to plan, though, hehe.

Hehe! Thank you. Snails? I don't remember snails. Oh, do you mean the hermit crabs? I was picking them up by the hundreds down at the beach. It was such a strange feeling on my hands! lol

I've said it already.. but this is such an awesome video. Even if you feel it was rushed and what not, you captured the emotion and feel-good feeling of the camping trip and something Dave and Kelley will remember as a fantastic wedding anniversary.

Thank you, Kyle! I really hope they like it! I love the part of you jumping up and down on the bridge! hehe.

    Wonderful Shots!

I can't wait to see your short film.
  • Matthew Brown plus 4 months ago
Thank you, Mitchell! We're recording the last two tracks of music with the string quartet this week and hopefully it'll be done shortly after that. After a ton of obstacles and time delays I hope the film will turn out alright. It was a good learning experience nonetheless.

hey matthew, i spent 2 months checking the "My contacts" page, hoping there was a new video. Beautiful, as always.

You made the first video i saw here on vimeo, and you're still my favorite with the HV30. Also, i must thank you for introducing me to Efterklang and the other songs you used in your videos: like you said on a comment for a video of mine, we have the same taste in music (Yann Tiersen!)
Good luck with your short film!

p.s.(sorry for my bad English but I'm Italian :P)

    Hey Matt,
I just discovered your videos on vimeo last week and really dig all of them. The silhouette shots at the beach look great. I love your macro stuff and decided I wanted to grab one for my HVX. I got to use it in a music video I shot this weekend.
    Keep up the good work.

  • Justin Ho 4 months ago
Wow great job man! The shot compositions looked wonderful, and I love your color grading! What do you use to color correct, I love the softness there is to the shots, because HD footage tends to be very sharp (Unlike Film), but you're able to soften the images, what do you use to do that?

Very good, but it still has some ghosting like the previous video. When exporting from Vegas, please don't forget to select all clips in the timeline and disable resample.

Thank you for the reminder! :) I was in such a hurry making the video this week that it slipped my mind. I've got your settings bookmarked to get it right next time. ;)

Really nice Matthew - they sound like great people and it was great of you to put this together for them. Beautiful captures and editing so I will say this (I've always got something to say..hehehe) - never apologize for your work Matthew - you are far too talented drunk or not.

    ;-)

  • ⾺ Dan Huston plus 4 months ago
hee - thanks! The new pic is all Maria Bowskill - genius with Photoshop and using AE with her vids - she took my boring headshot and made it.....well, pretty in pink...haha!

Again, I thought this was a great vid.... keep it up.

  • Jared Levy plus 4 months ago
the sound on that was top notch! i notice that you use songs in some of your videos from popular artists (brian eno for one). did you contact him or figure that since the video wasnt a commercial endeavor it was straight? thanks for the insight
  • Matthew Brown plus 4 months ago
Thank you, man! Some of the artists I do know or have conversed with, but as long as you aren't using music from the Warner Music Group I think you'll be alright...they are CRAZY music hunters on youtube and will mute your entire video so their music won't play. On vimeo, though, feel perfectly comfortable using any music track. Nothing I use the videos for ends in me making money off of them with the exception of a couple artists. I hope this helps. :)

  • Matthew Brown plus 4 months ago
Hehe, thank you Steve!! I really appreciate it man! I'm recording the last two tracks of music tomorrow for my short...I would love a critique from you in the next couple of weeks before I send it out to festivals. And yes, one day we will meet. I'll hopefully be knowledgeable enough to be on Filmfellas! hehe. Talk to you soon!! :)

Keep Rolling, can't wait to see the next video.

I love all of your videos, and it is because of you that I've convinced myself to get an HV30. Do you use any extra lenses, accessories, etc with your camera or is taken with just the camera itself and then given such a professional look in post production? I'm not very knowledgeable (yet) with lenses and other parts to add on to the camera, that's why I ask.
  • Matthew Brown plus 4 months ago
Actually, I'm not very knowledgeable on lenses or anything yet either. I don't have any accessories whatsoever. I've been experimenting and learning how I can make manual focus give really good depth of field and then have played around with the editing enough to know how to make things look good I guess. Thanks for the kind words!

    Hey Matthew, that looks great!
It's really funny to see that you don't care about all the thinks like: filming with a steady cam, filming against the sun and using footage stuff which normally isn't "usable", at least if you follow all these "make video's like a professional" tutorials. That's great, so go on and make us happy by braking all the rules again and again. It looks so nice!! Regards from the Netherlands
  • Matthew Brown plus 4 months ago
Hehe, thank you Mario! My teachers would get annoyed with me because I'd always want to do something different. The first year of film school they gave me a lot of criticism, but after that they saw it was working and let me do what I wanted. I'll definitely go and breaks the rules and keep experimenting. Thanks for the encouragement, Mario!! :)

Yeah...I know I'm a whimp, but your video about your camping trip with your new found friends made me shed a tear (or two). This is because it made me think about mom who is bed ridden since almost a year ago due to a stroke (her second massive stroke in 7 yrs). She is paralized on one side and unable to communicate with us. Though we try to help her add some meaning and happiness to her life, it is a sad stage she and people like her go through. I am so happy that there exists people like you who have such a marvelous talent in not just creating beautiful pictures/videos, but also capturing such an array of feeling, life, and human affections in your "ART"....most definitely should be discribed as "ART" to say the least. I feel challenged by this video and the other work you've done to make my own attempt to capture what ever beautiful moments mom will continue to share with us before she finds true comfort, rest, joy, peace, and happiness.

I am a fan of your work. Great stuff. I know you don't use any lenses and adapters etc. What did you film this in 30p or 24p? any color grading?
  • Matthew Brown plus 2 months ago
Thanks man! This video was shot in 30p and rendered out in 24p, and there was plenty of color grading just using the basic color grading functions of Sony Vegas.
  •
  • JPAZ 2 months ago
Cool thanks for the response. I'm about to start filming some things in 30p...so I don't have to worry about all that pulldown removal stuff....seems like pain. I like that you use 30p and videos still have a nice look closer to film look.
