This is a video clip I directed and animated for the Belgian artist Jonas Winterland, for the title song of his new album (translation: "People are made of thin paper"). I searched for a concept that would be easy to animate and could be produced within a few days time, which is quite a limiting demand given that 2.5 minutes of animation can quickly take weeks if not months to complete.
After a few initial animation tests, I started shooting the backplates. Some of the backplates are animated (e.g. the leafs in the first two shots). Making corrections to the backplates was fairly easy due to the heavy Depth of Field that would be applied in post, making it easy to quickly changes background elements.
The paper figure was animated using dynamics. I did add a few elements to "control" the dynamic effects, because I wanted to suggest a subtle rhythm in certain shots.
The final result is a film in which there is no story, so I guess a lot of people will label this as "boring", which I fully understand. If you do find something interesting in this video´s imagery, please leave a message in the comments, I would be very happy to hear your thoughts.
