how did you connect RED EVF to 5D?
    are they compatible?
  • Stephen Murphy plus 3 months ago
He didnt connect them? The behind the scenes documentary was shot on the canon 5DMK2 and the film was shot on RED.

Is the music part of the soundtrack? Sounds great.

    Interesting project!
  • Christopher Pitbladdo plus 4 months ago
The music you hear is composed by Cliff Martinez, and it's from the movie, 'Solaris'. It's called First Sleep.

    Beautiful, isn't it?
  • Christopher Pitbladdo plus 4 months ago
If you like First Sleep, I'd recommend you get hold of the soundtrack to Traffic, and Narc. They're also composed by Cliff Martinez.
  • Joschka Laukeninks 4 months ago
I'll definately give it a try!
    Thank you very much!

Congrats to Ed Thomas - really nicely shot. Music is from Solaris, which I love.

Stephen Murphy's lighting looks like it is going to be fantastic. A truly talented guy.

Really a good work. Interesting process of the movie and the actress is "glamour".

By the way this "behind the scenes" is lovely shot by Ed and the music of "Solaris" gives a climax.

    Goodluck to the crew
  • Londonmark Films 4 months ago
Thanks Abbas, Birgit Ludwig is a great actress and Ed done a fantastic job.

    What microphone did you use?
  • Ed Thomas plus 4 months ago
I used the Zoom H4n audio recorder, with it's built-in mic, then synced to the Canon 5D footage manually in post. There was a lot of air-con hum in the room - so really should've plugged a shotgun mic or clip mic into it.

absolutely marvellous! If the final finish of Absolute is anything near as good as the picture quality and sound of this behind the scenes footage, then you're on to an absolute winner Mark!!!

Well done, you have a great team working with you. All the best for the final production :)
  • Londonmark Films 4 months ago
Thanks Rob, will pass on the best wishes, the finished product will look and sound much better, but this is very good, well done Ed......Mark

Hi, Just wondering what lens you using on your 5D there?
  • Ed Thomas plus 4 months ago
Most of the shots are using a Nikon 50mm f1.4 manual focus lens - which I started using before the firmware update to get around the exposure issue. But it's still great because focusing with an AF lens is so fiddly. And the wide shots are all on the 17-40mm f4 Canon lens.
  • Christopher Pitbladdo plus 3 months ago
    Thank you kindly.

My finger's currently hovering over the 'buy now' button on a 5D MkII... There'll be hell to pay with the wife!

"My finger's currently hovering over the 'buy now' button on a 5D MkII... There'll be hell to pay with the wife!"

Just tell her you slipped, fell, and "accidentally" landed on the "buy now" button and that they have a "terrible" return policy.

That is a unique aspect ratio for bts footage. It adds to the drama, and allows for some beautiful compositions.

2.35.1 does it everytime, thanks for leaving some comments best wishes Mark
  • Zsolt Halupa 2 months ago
is there any way you could enlighten us on the workflow to create a 2.35.1 aspect ratio sequence in FCP? I would be so grateful none of the presets seem to allow me to do it.

Great behind the scene, very insightful. Thanks.

Just out of curiosity, I seem to recognize that apartment in Vauxall, was there a grand piano by any chance? And did you have a view on Battersea power station?

The behind-the-scenes footage is absolutely stunning and rich. I love low-light & night footage. The hand-held is some of the smoothest DSLR footage I've seen. Did you have the Canon 5D on a shoulder mount rig? Very beautiful - think you just made me a convert for my next film - mikecarrollfilms.com

    The shots and edit too.

One question thou - the sound.
Did you used a separate recorder
    or on the 5D Mk2 ?

    Best

I hate to be the one to say this but I feel like the Behind the Scenes shot on this 5D looks better than the trailer. If the film was shot on a RED the coloring is a bit off. Excellent work on this short though. I love the depth of field and the music is incredible.
  • Londonmark Films 3 months ago
Yes the red footage is at 1K 1/4 resolution and ungraded, however the Canon 5D is excellent. But not really fair to pass this judgement on Red because the 2k master is stunning.
  • Peter McKenzie plus 3 months ago
I would love to see the 2K master. Please please please!

This looks fantastic. I am sitting here trawling through videos to talk myself out of shooting a clip on a 5D and this has just talked me back into it. It does look better than the RED footage but I assume the RED footage isn't graded yet so it's unfair to pass judgement....
  • Londonmark Films 3 months ago
Yes the red footage is at 1K 1/4 resolution and ungraded, however the Canon 5D is excellent.

  • William Bloomfield plus 3 months ago
I've had my eyes peeled on the dslr's for a while, amazing you can get something that produces that kind of quality for less than a Z1!! (without counting lenses etc of course...)

I'm only 2 years into my videography career so forgive me if I seem naive...

But an interesting question, based on your experience which would you rather have, sony EX3 or Canon 5D MK2? (with a total disregard for audio)

    Hello Mark & Ed,

As a newbie filmmaker with no formal training, I am very grateful for any behind the scenes information as part of my learning process. I found this both compelling and informative. I'm impressed by how your DP describes how he sets up the shots as close to the envisioned production values as possible, minimizing time spent in post-prod. Lighting these scenes certainly was challenging but it sounds like you have an amazing gaffer who really knows his stuff. Thanks for sharing this!
