If you’ve seen Tony Bryant’s Day In The Life video on Peter, it’s unlikely you’ve forgotten him.
If you haven’t seen the video, Peter is an artist and writer from Caloundra, who also lives with Down syndrome.
Muscle tone and movement difficulties make speech very difficult for him; and he is effectively ‘without speech’.
Peter is not alone.
In fact, he regularly meets with a group of people in Brisbane who call themselves the Brotherhood of the Wordless.
They use facilitated communication to communicate, to socialise and to write.
This year, with the help of some extraordinary people, including performer Ghostboy, the brotherhood performed at the Woodford Folk Festival.
For me it was an incredible experience to hear the words of those who are unable to voice them, ring out loud and clear, unapologetic in their honesty and their strength.
And to see an audience spellbound by them.
In a world where the loudest voice is often the one that is heard, it's wonderful to hear the voices of the voiceless.
