What's so Great about XDCAM EX? - Part 3
PART 3 of 3:
In this video Doug Jensen, owner of Vortex Media and the producer of several XDCAM training DVDs, takes a detailed look inside the Sony XDCAM EX product line and explains how the PMW-EX1 and PMW-EX3 are unlike any cameras that you've used in the past. Without getting bogged down in jargon or confusing specifications, Jensen relates his personal experiences with the cameras and offers many examples and ideas for how the EX1 and EX3 can streamline your workflow; make you more productive and profitable; and how they will change your whole way of doing business. If you want to find out what XDCAM EX is all about, how the EX1 and EX3 camcorders differ from each other, and why XDCAM is the new Betacam then this video is for you.

This is an excellent review of these cameras. I also have your instructional DVD's and they are awesome!
Having owned the EX1 foe over a year and tested it in almost every situation I would say that right now it's the best camera for the money. That being said here is what I want the ex5 to have.
1. A better designed viewfinder - the ex3 is great but is hard to store properly. The new one should have an easier way to remove and still use the camera.
2. Better balance and maybe a shoulder mount that can be removed easily. All third party solutions are cumbersome (I've tried them all) One solution that was easy was the ex grip from manfrotto. It worked great for handheld, the problem was the stress from the grip cracked the plastic tripod adaptor plate on the bottom of the camera. That leads to the next upgrade.
2. A metal tripod adaptor plate at the bottom.
3. A slot for the new flash cards. Prob would kill sxs sales though so we may need to stick with 3rd party solution on that one.
So that's it! I'm like you, I can't really see how much more they can improve this camera without it getting too expensive. Ok 4k support..ha ha
Some of the suggestions I made to the EX design team when I was at the factory outside of Tokyo in February '08 have already been adopted - -so hopefully some of my other feedback will also come to life.
Yes the biggest problem with my EX3 is the viewfinder, it makes it hard to travel with and store, although we have designed a padded jacket that is only few centimeters bigger than the Camera, & and protects it perfectly during carrying via strap over your shoulder & in the overhead locker on a airplane flight, it’s perfect but not the best solution.
Doug, am I to assume from what Paul Miller said, Sony will be bringing another version of the EX3 out soon in an attempt to resolve this issue? If this is the case, will I be able to get my new existing EX3 viewfinder converted?
Regards Rex
I expect Sony to announce some additions to the EX product line in the next few months, but I believe the EX3 and EX1 will remain as they are. I can't really see how you could retro-fit a new viewfinder on the EX3, but sometimes Sony has surprises. I think you should assume the camera that you have right now won't be affected by any new announcements.
