At first glance a sea of 1500 people dressed completely in white ranging from boiler-suits and robes to the more minimalistic attires, filling a massive shed the size of an airplane-hanger, resembled some kind of futuristic colony on Mars.
However, tower speakers, lasers and the ominous yet seductive walls of boxes containing thousands of bottles of UV glow paint implied a more tribal, frenzied and colourful ritual was about to unfold before us.
For the first time in NZ, the hugely successful paint party concept was upon us. We covered the cameras in glade-wrap and braces for the impact but nothing could have prepared us for excitement of what was about to take place.
Six months in the planning and bringing together some of NZ’s best DnB and Harddance acts (including the one and only Tiki Tanne, Illuminate was like nothing Wellington has ever seen before.
Torrents of UV glow paint across a wild crowd of white-robed revelers, Illuminate played on the tribal instincts within all of us to come together and be part of something larger than ourselves. To paint and to be painted, to dance all night, this was the challenge and chance to become part of the phenomenon sweeping the US.
Based on the originality of the concept, organization of the event, the artist’s performances, attitude of security staff and (obviously) audience participation this event will go down in history as one of the most incredible dance parties in Wellington’s living memory succeeding everybody’s expectation.
…and for those of you who missed out this time round… there are already rumors that another Illuminate is being planned for February 2010!
