Foot Injuries and Ankle Injuries - Podiatrist in Brooklyn and Staten Island, NY - Howard Dinowitz, DPM
Podiatrist Dr. Howard Dinowitz of The Foot Typing Centers discusses the symptoms, causes and treatments for Foot and Ankle Injuries.
A sprain is an injury in a ligament as a result of sudden over-stretching of the ligament. It usually is caused by an abnormal movement such as a turning of the ankle or stepping into a hole in the street. Sprains are not to be taken lightly because unless they are held in a firm position, they may heal in this stretched position. A fracture is a break or crack in a bone caused by injury. Sprains and fractures are accompanied by pain, swelling, redness and heat. Home care includes rest, ice, compression and elevation but if thye area is not much better in 24-48 hours a Podiatry consultation is in order. X-rays will help determine the nature of the injury and necessary treatment. Professional treatment may includes immobilizing bandages, CAM Walkers and Casts if necessary followed by physical therapy and rehabilitation to get you back to activity and prevent recurrences
