This story is about John Joblin,a professional fisherman working out of Ballina in northern NSW. Fishing is all he's ever done. He knows the sea like a famer knows the land.
In this video he is catching snapper in a trap. He puts down 6 each day at various locations off the shore at Ballina, then pulls them in a day or two later with the fish trapped inside. The smaller undersized fish swim out through the wire, making this way of fishing sustainable for the long term future of the region.
I was priveledged to go out to sea with John & Hayden on a glorious early morning. John was very pleased with his catch that day, the sea had turned a brilliant dark blue, there was tide on the bottom and the fish were feeding.
Later he packs the fish for the Sydney market as well we local markets and the fish Co-op.
