I did this film for my friend Buck McAllister who's family owns McAllister Towing tug boat company. I shot the film with one camera, in real time, during the towing of the Intrepid Warship back to it's dock on the West Side of Manhattan after it's refurbishment. I shot with a Panasonic HVX 200 camera with a polarizer filter and I cut and colored in Final Cut Pro using all the basic tools that come with Final Cut. Nothing fancy.

I like the colors and I love the music, what is it?
  • Jon Kane plus 4 months ago
The moody music is from the soundtrack to "Flags Of Our Fathers" - Clint Eastwood flick. The rock song is Bruce Springsteen, "The Rising"
  •
  • Jon Kline plus 4 months ago
One of the tracks is Springsteen.

Is the vignetting from the lens or done in post?
  • Jon Kane plus 4 months ago

This is really great. I think this was done by Jon Kane from Optic Nerve. They do really good work there.

I loved it already and then you topped it off with Bruce. Looked like it was directed by Michael Bay with John Schwartzman as DP. It's always special to see something unscripted and live turn out so cinematic and smooth. It's also unique how a casual video assignment from a friend can turn into a one-stop demo reel. Great camera work and decisions both on the boat and in front of the computer. DEFINITELY re-upload it as 1280x720 HD, don't hold back it's full potential.

Stock HVX lens? Really? Wow. Very nice.
  • Jon Kane plus 4 months ago
Yeah. But the polarizer helped out the sky a lot.
  • Scott Enberg 4 months ago
The depth of field is what really caught my attention. I'm a religious user of polarizers, and NDs on the HVX. Allowing me to keep the iris as open as possible. My first impression was that this was shot with 35mm adaptor. Like I said, nice work.
  • Jon Kane plus 4 months ago
Thanks man. The depth of field, in this case, was all about shooting far from the subject (zoomed in) on just about every shot.

Amazing video. For only one camera, you were a lot of different places. The sound added a huge amount to it, especially in the opening sequence. Your text at the top makes it sound easy, but it takes great skill to put a film like this together.

Wow really terrific work I'm blown away. Every choice you made here was the right one. I love how you included sounds from the shoot in the soundtrack as opposed to just having music, which is what most people would of done myself included.

The images are gorgeous, the shots are filled with energy, they're organic, natural. Honestly I'm pretty jealous, I'm not very good with filming live events, I need time to set up shots and lighting and so on, but this looks like a professional team helmed by a veteran DP shot this.

Anyway I'm rambling again, thanks for sharing :)

Nice flow, timing and rhythm. Colors were nice, looking raw and fit nicely too the theme, kind of rugged. Also very good camera work and placement. Others and myself included, liked the sound work, mixing live with great background sound choices. liked also the battle sounds, speeches, etc, which added an overall rugged sea-going and historic sentiment to the work. Edited nice. Not overly fast clipped with transitions. Sound and footage connected nice to the flow of the story. Thought the Bruce song was fitting too. In the end you made a great promotional piece of what was just one but important example of what your friends company does and how they go about their business. He must be very happy. You are a bit modest, because there is much time involved both in front of the computer and behind the camera for sure. Great professional work!!!

Nice video! In the description you spelled it as McCallister, but on the boat it looked like McAllister, which is how I spell my name actually. I just noticed since I've been working on family tree stuff.

  • P E R F E C T - Congratulations, Jon. It´s one of the few really professional videos I have found in Vimeo -amog the rest I include my own amateur ones-.
Everything was great: Shots, color, editing (specially), music, sounds, mood, essence...
Hard to believe you just made it with HVX Stock lens... I even noticed a subtle tilt-shift shot but I guess it´s just your proffesional use of it.
    Thanks for sharing and teaching

What color settings did you use in Final Cut? Really, really great-looking stuff.
  • Jon Kane plus 4 months ago
Hey Eric. I just used the '3 way color corrector' that comes with Final Cut. I played a lot with the color wheels. In some instances I used more than one 3 way color effect on a shot. I also used some vignetting, from the basic filters that come with Final Cut, to create blurs.

I love your work with the camera Jon - and what a great camera. The colour is fabulous. Most striking and powerful is your camera positioning - you have an artists eye, as well as the cinematographers sense of drama in movement.
One point I feel I must make: I think there is a loss of the Tug 'story' when you cut in the historic footage which I think and appreciate must tell the story of the Intrepid. So I think you'd have a better and more whole story without the b&w footage.
This is the first video I have seen on Vimeo and I shall eagerly look at more of your work. You have a real talent.

Great compositions and color. A celebration of the working class.
I was struck by the use of good ol'fashioned rope in this enormous undertaking.
  • Bob Dahringer 4 months ago
    Hi Olen,
The old fashioned rope we used to attach to the Intepid was actually a 'high performance' synthetic; insanely strong, stonger than steel of the same diameter.
Breaking strenght on the order of 390,000 lbs. or so.
Pretty cool for something no bigger around than your wrist and floats to boot.
This particular line was loaned to us as a demonstrator from a cordage manufacturer.

Thanks Bob. My new studio is on the pier in Red Hook and I see you guys traveling back and forth all day out my window. I can't wait to go out again. It was also incredible when Buck allowed me drive the freakin' tug back from the Intrepid pull. That tug was quite a bit more powerful than my 20 foot Grady White!

    You guys are just awesome.

They hired the right man for the job. It is amazing what you did. Rally well done. Many people say they need more cameras, better software, a couple of asistants, or whatever... Here is an example that none of that is necessary if the man behind it has some serious talent, knowledge and experience! Bravo!

Incredible Piece. Well done! Seeing your other work, you have already inspired me personally, without even know who you were.
Love the use of slow motion and the clips of added sound to complete the feel of the intro. I thought that it lost something with the 'war films' and such. I would have just stuck with showcasing the crew and details of McAllister Tugs. The fact they were towing the Intrepid was a bonus. What if it was all about McAllister and then in the end you caught a glimpse of what they were actually towing that day?
