The South Eugene High School Axemen Ultimate team journey to Blaine, MN on May 16th and 17th this spring for the UPA Western Championship. This was the 5th year that the championship has been held and every year South has come looking for a championship title. In 2005, they were knocked out in the semis against The Northwest School and took home a tie for 3rd. In 2006 South faced the The Northwest School again, but this time were knocked out in the quarters giving them a 5th place finish. In 2007, South made it all the way to the finals but came up short against The Northwest School. And in 2008, South had their worst finish, coming in 8th place after losing to Monroe HS in a quarterfinal matchup very few people wish to remember.

But, this was 2009, and South was strongly considered a favorite with highly talented players with large chips on their shoulders.
