Getting it right on employer verification will be the linchpin of an effective immigration reform bill. The goal of mandatory electronic verification is to provide a simple, reliable way for good-faith employers to hire legally authorized workers and deter others from hiring those not eligible to work in the United States.

MPI’s newest report assesses the strengths and weaknesses of the existing electronic verification system, E-Verify, and recommends steps to minimize the system’s problems and unintended consequences. We assess existing and potential tools for strengthening identity authentication, and recommend next-generation verification concepts that would tap new technologies and practices to overcome the core weaknesses of the current system.
