Trapped in the Closet chapters 1-12 SING ALONG! | 2005 | 40:00mins | DVD | USA
R. Kelly, the undisputed king of R&B, never seems to be far from the current soul scene. Be it collaborating with his homeboy Snoop or trading verses with Ciara, this Chicago soul man has displayed consistent brilliance throughout his fifteen-year career. Much like his musical forefathers Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Donny Hathaway (the latter two also hailed from Chi-town), R. Kelly makes songs for ladies lounging in suites as well as homeboys b-balling in the streets.
Trapped in the Closet is an urban opera or hip-hopera released by R&B singer R. Kelly in 2005. The songs relate an ongoing narrative, which Kelly and Jive Records promoted by releasing each chapter to radio stations one at a time. The only chord progression used is an Am chord (with a C in bass which then slides down to an A) to an E-Major chord (with a G# in the bass, which then slides down to an E) with crescendos and more instruments added at some points to enhance feelings of suspense. The song resolves to the normal E-Major chord. The songs tell the story of a one-night stand that sets off a chain of events, which gradually reveal a greater web of lies, sex, and deceit. In November 2005, six more chapters were released, for a total of twelve, on DVD. Nearly two years later, in August 2007, ten more chapters were released on DVD and shown on the Independent Film Channel (IFC), as well as on IFC’s website. On December 10th, Kelly announced that the next installment of chapters would be released in the summer of 2009; he is quoted as saying, “the past chapters are nothing compared to these.”
