Dr. Doug Kirby, PhD, was the 2012 John P. McGovern Award Recipient. Dr. Kirby presented his talk, "Applying Theory and Research to a Public Health Problem: The Success of Sex and STI/HIV Education in Reducing Adolescent Sexual Risk Behavior," on September 21, 2012.
Dr. Kirby was a Senior Research Scientist at ETR Associates in Scotts Valley, California. Dr. Kirby was involved in research to reduce adolescent sexual risk behaviors for the past 22 years. He co-authored research on a number of curricula which significantly reduced unprotected sex, either by delaying sex, increasing condom use, or increasing contraceptive use. He painted a more comprehensive and detailed picture of the risk and protective factors associated with adolescent sexual behavior, contraceptive use, and pregnancy, and identified important common characteristics of effective sexuality education and HIV education programs. Dr. Kirby served on the Board of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy and chaired the National Campaign’s Task Force on Effective Programs and Research.
