The Cherry Blossom is a relatively simple piece containing just three colors. It
required 300 hours to complete as there are three separate layers of glue and glitter. While the piece is simple in color content, it is by no means simple in terms of technique and materials used.
The Cherry Blossom tree means two different things in China, and in Japan respectively. In China the tree is a symbol of power and sexual prowess, feminine beauty, as well as love. In Japan, the Cherry Blossom tree represents the fragility of human life. A life that blooms but for a short time only. It's often aligned with the fundamental teachings of Buddhism instilling the notion that
all life is suffering, yet it is transitory. I created this piece as I've always been intrigued by these two fairly opposite perspectives and by the shear beauty of the Cherry Blossom tree.
The piece is 8'x 4', and was created out of Bavarian Crystal, wood, glue, and various archival sealants.
