In October 2012, Hawaii spent two weeks at the HeadSpace Art Residency in the mountains of Nara, Japan.

"It gave me time to think, and breathe, and most importantly, find some headspace for myself after a busy year. I spent time with my amazing hosts, Jamie and Aiko, and their two cats. I met some of the locals. I walked. I sat. I breathed. And I watched as the day passes from bright blue light in the morning to deep yellows and pinks in the late afternoon.

The area around Kayamori House is lush with colour and full of sounds and smells. The project I created during my time is simple in it's premise and execution. In fact it's a literal translation of my experience. It is the product of simply taking a moment to myself every day and observing one thing. To stay in one single place for a small period of time. I wanted to capture some of those colours and sounds I saw around me, and I wanted to use them to spell out what they gave me. Literally."
