gorgeous. how do you get your shots so still? i know this is a stupid question, but even with my tripod i can't be still.
  • Ian Lucero plus 4 months ago
For these shots I used my trusty old leg and shoe and I also have The Pod. thepod.ca/

It's an old The Pod and too small for my camera. I got it before they started making bigger ones. They are made in canada and great for traveling. It also helps to make the camera really heavy.

i must shake a lot naturally. you've got a steady hand my friend.
  • Ian Lucero plus 4 months ago
If you are comparing a traditional video camera to a dslr, I think it is more the fact that the mk2 isn't ergonomically suited to do hand held video. That's why all these 3rd party folks are making all these add-ons to make it so. Like I said, the more weight the steadier the shot when you are doing things hand held. The lighter the camera the more likely it is to pick up every little bump and tweak your body creates.

Most of the shots in this video were shot from down low, camera was placed on the ground or on my foot or leg or put on a fire hydrant or police barrier.

We've got China town in Montreal, (that's about 4 hours drive from the northern mountain where I live) and during the Chinese New Year festivities, it looks just like that... maybe next time I'll get some shot too? Remind me when it's New Year again...

  • Ian Lucero plus 4 months ago
Yeah. If you happen to be in the Seattle area on Sept 11, he is premiering some new tunes for 40 piece orchestra at Town Hall.
  • Sunny Thaper plus 4 months ago
Really?! I'm sure I could find a reason to make it out there! I have friends and family out there, would be pretty easy.
  • Ian Lucero plus 4 months ago
I think you should come out to Seattle! Let me know if you do. I'm planning to shoot the show, if you decide to make it to the show come say hello. I'm the filipino guy with the video camera.
  • Sunny Thaper plus 4 months ago
I'll be the Indian guy with the video camera if I do come out! My picture is exactly whatI look like.
  • Ian Lucero plus 4 months ago
Hahaha! I look nothing like my icon. I mean I don't look all black and white. But I do wear glasses and hopefully I'll be wearing a hat.

liked the visual, the music but the repeated stop start interrupted the flow. How can i get the video to play without the cotinuous stop-start.It sounds like background music for a movie.
  • Ian Lucero plus 4 months ago
Try to let the video load all the way then start play.

I can keep the 5D Mark II fairly steady handheld, especially with IS and the heavier 70-200.

    See: vimeo.com/5795080
  • Ian Lucero plus 4 months ago
Wow yeah that's pretty nice steadily framed image until you change the framing. Might be that the IS is making the image jerkier than it needs to be on when you make bigger, more sudden moves. I've been shooting more often with my cameras images stabilization set to OFF because it isn't worth the hassle. You most definitely see how bad OIS or IS is when the camera is tripod mounted - for example - you have the shot framed and then the subject moves and you move the camera and there is a delay or slight shift(jerk) to the picture.

In my opinion if you are doing tripod work, if you have a nice fluid head to begin with you don't ever need to turn on IS. If you are doing handheld work I think it is a little more effective but that differs from camera to camera (or lens to lens).
  • John Hanam plus 4 months ago
I guess the same goes for video as does for photos: tripod + IS = nono... I actually haven't tried tripod mounting with video shooting yet - it has been pretty spontaneous so far :) But I do hate the jerking it gives when repositioned.

WOW! Thank You everyone for viewing this video and the overwhelming 'Likes' and positive comments. I am happy you all enjoyed this. I had an amazing time filming it and hanging out with my friend Daniel who took me on a bike ride that night in the lower east side and showed me this. I don't think I would have run into Canal Street this way if it wasn't for him. Again thank you thank you!

    ok here we go:

    1. i was like "this is cool" until 1:35 and i was like WHOA and shut of all the lights and put it on full screen and watched that part over and over. holy crap. its like magic! and some are chaotic and swirling like a ... a swarm! and sometimes when i watch it i see one just twirling and dancing on its own, doing something incredible despite the chaos all around. there is so much to see in this! AWESOME.

    2. i wish i could have a LIKE and LOVE button so i could put this in the LOVE portion

    3. the music! fucking great. i will scour the interwebs for this Jherek Bischoff character. ...vimeo, thank you for all these wonderful people making things and letting me find all of this incredible wonderous music!

    4. as for the douchebag about the film ... fuck that. if this was going on IN THE BLOODY STREET then its fair game. and you didnt steal their movie or even film or whatever plot/idea they have. you observed something and made it into your own. and it is beautiful. AND what did you do with it - you put it up FOR FREE for ANYONE to watch and enjoy. you arent $ profitting $ from it, so F those guys giving you shit. F em right in the corporate stink eye.

    :D keep it up brother
  • Ian Lucero plus 4 months ago
That's awesome you enjoyed this. This is where I was headed when I called you that one time I was riding our bikes to Chinatown. We were on our way to see THIS. I had no idea it was gonna be that fantastic.

Jherek is a pretty awesome guy and musician. He was the guy that introduced me to Quasimoto/Madlib by loaning me a bunch of his CD's. I am forever indebted to that discovery. It is how I thought of the name Otis, as in the dog Otis as in Madlib's real name, Otis Jackson Jr.

Yeah and as for people annoyed by this being fact or fiction... well... ooops, too bad.

    Thanks Pirata!
  • Pirata718 4 months ago
noooooooo shit. hrm well i'll be. hahah i remember that call. when are you coming back?!
  • Ian Lucero plus 4 months ago
shoot i don't know. Would be great to come back in the fall with Kamala (and Otis! - set him loose in the park) but we are trying to get tickets to the Philippines and Guam then we will be going to Hawai'i.

It would be great to come by in the Spring again.

maybe because of the music, that make me think of a grand banquet and the Warring States.the stillness of viewpoint makes the appearance good.the total feeling it just like water flowing.
  • Ian Lucero plus 4 months ago
Wow! That's an interesting introspection. I love the visual of it being "just like water flowing"

WoW that was cool. What a great leader bed for movie credits on a Jackie Chan, Van Damn or Steven Segall film. Have you sent this out to some of those producers? Good stuff I think. Thanks for sharing.
  • Ian Lucero plus 4 months ago
Hahah thanks!! and You are welcome.

Well as it is mentioned above and in the Credits on the side this a set for a movie that was being shot on Canal Street in New York. It would be impossible to take credit, nor would I want to, for the imagery I captured. The stuff in the video is just what happened to be there at the time... I didn't set this up. What I did do was frame the shots, find the music to go with it and did the edit.

just watched this again. beautiful. i wish you were coming to the vimeo party saturday :(
  • Ian Lucero plus 4 months ago
arrrrgh!! I know I wish I could make it to the meet up. But I'm helping Kamala with a show this weekend which potentially could make her some $$$ and definitely give her more exposure and a commission or two.

Some day. I wish there was something like this in Portland or Seattle or Vancouver B.C. That is a little closer.
