Jesus unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring
good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim
the year of the Lord’s favor.” …Then he began to say to them, “Today, this
scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. Luke 4:18-21
When Jesus stood up in his hometown Synagogue and read the message from Isaiah, the
message itself did not upset the people. They became upset when they learned that they
would have to change their attitudes toward outsiders … they would have to include
people they routinely excluded.
When was the last time God’s Word caused us conflict? When was the last time you heard
something … in a sermon, a reading, a prayer or a hymn … that so outraged you that you
wanted to hurt or kill the messenger?
The Old Testament Prophets, Jesus, the Reformers and all other prophets had or have one thing
in common, they were obedient. That’s all they could do. That’s all any of us can do. Be faithful in
our calling and let God guide and care for us.
Our challenge is to find out what God is doing … how God is doing it …who God is calling to help
…and where God is doing it!
