2 August, 2000: After a short discussion about Space 158 at the bginning of this clip, we move to the northern end of Space 86 to the excavation of the burial pits under the north-central platform (F.162) of Building 3. Introducing Dr. Willeke Wendrich, now of UCLA, a specialist in prehistoric Egypt and basketry, who has been nrought to Çatalhöyük as a consultant for the Neolithic baskets. She discusses with Ruth Tringham, Lori Hager and Mirjana Stevanovic the fragile white phytolith remains of baskets here and the difficulties in studying them. Lori has found some phytoliths in the upper part pf the fill of burial pit F.634 in the north-central platform (F.162) of Building 3. The phyoliths are immediately under the "lid" of the burial pit. They show up as white chalky fragments. Willeke is trying to determine whether these are phytoliths (silica shadow) of a basket. Meanwhile in the nearby platform (F.173) human remains specialist Basak Boz with her assistant Tonya and conservator Emin lift the bones of the skeleton of F.631 out of the grave. Wait to load.
